Houston (CBS Houston) – Houston Texans guard Wade Smith said Tuesday that he’s ready to go for the season opener in San Diego, Monday night.

“Well, I play left guard and I’m not the decision-maker here, but, if I’m ready to go and the coaches feel good, then I’ll play,” Smith said.

Smith underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in early August and has been on the road to recovery.

The veteran left guard simply answered ‘No’ when asked if the coaches have told him when they’ll make a decision about whether he’ll play this week.

Tuesday he said that he has been watching his backups during this preseason.

“Those are my guys. Definitely have been keeping up with them and the progress that they’ve been doing, with (G/C) Ben Jones and (G/T David) Quessenberry. They held down the fort for the preseason. The lights are coming on.”

Smith and the Texans head to San Diego to take on the Chargers, September 9.
