As the 32 NFL teams had to look at their rosters and figure out who would make the final 53 some big names were on the losing side of those decisions.
Topping the list of big name cuts is probably Tim Tebow, who didn’t make it onto the Patriots final roster. Joining him was a fellow BCS National champion, Vince Young, who was let go by the Packers ahead of the 6pm ET deadline to make cuts.
Other notable Quarterbacks not making a roster were a couple of Notre Dame alums, Jimmy Clausen (Panthers) and Brady Quinn (Seahawks).
Jonathon Dwyer, Pittsburgh Steelers running back, was also cut. This was a big surprise to most considering Le’Von Bell is hurt and Dwyer has been in the system long enough to step in quickly if needed. Felix Jones was kept on the roster for Pittsburgh.
Also getting waived were notables, Robert Mechum (WR, Chargers), Lance Ball (RB, Broncos), Austin Collie (WR, 49ers), and Antoine Winfield (CB, Seahawks).
The final 53 isn’t always going to stay those 53, even before the regular season kickoff in a week. Teams like the Raiders kept two punters and four quarterbacks. Expect that to change soon. The Browns currently have no kickers on their roster. So unless they are planning to just go for it, they will probably add someone to the team, which means someone on the 53 now, will be out.
