Mike Meltser’s Week 1 CFB Picks
Last week –
Texas A&M -27 vs. Rice – I was very impressed by the late surge Rice had last season, but this one has all the makings of a runaway. A&M is a far better team, and should be able to do lots of damage on the ground with Ben Malena, Brandon Williams, and Trey Williams. Then, the sold out crowd at Kyle Field will have the ovation of the weekend when Johnny Manziel comes out to start the second half. I think that will prove way too much for the Owls to cover 27 on the road.
Georgia -2 at Clemson – Two programs you can’t fully trust, but I can trust Georgia a bit more than Clemson. I am a big fan of the Bulldogs’ weapons on offense, led by senior QB Aaron Murray. Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall is a tremendous RB combination, one of the best in the nation.
The fear is about the defense losing Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, and Bacarri Rambo, among others. The Tigers have a ton of firepower with Tahj Boyd and Sammy Watkins, but they did lose De’Andre Hopkins. I lean towards UGA.
Louisville -20.5 vs. Ohio – I expect Louisville to be in the conversation for the BCS title game for a while, considering their schedule in the American Athletic Conference. They should kick off the 2013 campaign with a bang. Ohio returns only 12 starters (although from a pretty good team), but the Cardinals have Teddy Bridgewater, who will be by far the best player on the field. I like his skill guys this season – De’Vante Parker and Michael Dyer.
