DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — A former first-grade teacher in South Texas caught with more than 1,000 sexually explicit images has been convicted of child pornography charges.

A federal jury in Del Rio on Thursday convicted 39-year-old Ruben A. Vazquez of receipt of child pornography, distribution of child pornography and access with intent to view child pornography.

Vazquez remains in custody pending sentencing. He faces up to 20 years on each receipt and distribution count, plus up to 10 years on the access count.

Vazquez taught at Calderon Elementary School in the San Felipe Independent School District in Del Rio before a June 2012 search of his home. Investigators seized computer equipment and recovered more than 1,000 images and about 100 videos of child porn.

Vazquez was placed on leave and later fired.
