HOUSTON (CBS Houston) CBS News is reporting that former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., and his wife a former Chicago alderman Sandi Jackson will serve time in prison for abusing Jackson’s campaign funds.
On Wednesday, Jackson was sentenced to 30 months in prison for looting his campaign funds, while his wife Sandra Jackson was sentenced to one year in jail.
The couple pleaded guilty to the misuse of campaign funds. Before sentencing, Jackson Jr. expressed remorse and sorrow for his mistakes: “I let a lot of people down,” he said, blowing his nose and apologizing to the American people, his constituents and his family. He asked the judge to send him to prison in Alabama, “so I can be as far away from everyone,” as stated from CBS News.
CBS Chicago also adds: “The couple appeared stunned to learn both would be going to prison, with Jackson Jr. rocking in his chair in the courtroom, holding his head in his hands after the judge’s ruling. Sandi sat down, laid her head on the defense table, and sobbed after learning her fate.”
