Houston (CBS Houston) – Editor’s Note:Camp Confidential will feature daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp.
Only a morning practice today, the team will take this afternoon and tomorrow off. Here is what you need to know about this morning’s practice.
>>>Ben Tate left halfway through practice when his groin tightened up. He didn’t seem overly concerned with the injury.
“I hope he is fine, I think it’s precautionary. We wanted to work a lot of young players today and the minute he said he was sore we got him out.” said Gary Kubiak
Dennis Johnson worked with the first team when Tate was out.
>>>Sixth round pick Alan Bonner sat out the second half of practice with a hamstring issue.
>>>Willie Jefferson finished off a strong week of practice with a dramatic swat of a Matt Schaub pass. At 6’5 Jefferson will have a lot of opportunities to knock down passes.
>>>Fans got their first look at Randy Bullock today as the team practiced special teams. He displayed solid leg strength drilling a 51-yard field goal. He also hit the cross-bar on back to back kicks.
>>>There was a Texans reunion of sorts this morning. J.J. Moses, Jamie Sharper, Chester Pitts, Jay Foreman, and Sports Radio 610′s Seth Payne all spent time reminiscing on the sidelines.
>>>Case Keenum didn’t have his best day. At one point, a deep ball was underthrown, then on the next play he fumbled the snap under center. Keenum doesn’t display the arm strength or ability to make the quick reads like T.J. Yates is showing. He can make every throw needed but not with the same zip as the two guys in front of him. At this point T.J. Yates would have to drastically fall off in order for Keenum to claim the number two spot.
>>>Brian Cushing continues to come along well. He’s still being held out of most running plays but is a full participant in passing plays.
>>>Matt Schaub and DeAndre Hopkins connected on a 50-yard deep ball during the team session. Hopkins does not look like a rookie. He’s poised and beats great coverage on a daily basis.
“My expectations for him are tremendous, that’s why we drafted him, that’s why we put him in the position we put him in very quickly.” said Kubiak.
>>> Many of the veterans including Andre Johnson, Antonio Smith, and JJ Watt were given the day off.
