Houston (CBS Houston) – Editor’s Note: Camp Confidential will feature daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp.
Day 3 of Texans training camp is in the books. Here is everything you need to know:
>>> Rookie OLB Sam Montgomery is in a walking boot after suffering a high ankle sprain. He’ll be out a couple of days.
>>> Meanwhile, RT Derek Newton said he will be a full go any day now. He talked about playing through the injury that required major surgery this off-season: “I had some pain here and there, but when it’s time to put it all the line for my team, I’m going to be there.”
>>> Starting left guard Wade Smith missed practice after coming in sick this morning.
>>> Gary Kubiak said tight end Garrett Graham is feeling better after missing the first three days of training camp with an illness. The Texans will gradually work him back onto the field.
>>> Today marked the first day of pads. And things got a little chippy, especially after DE Antonio Smith basically tossed rookie running back Dennis Johnson like a rag doll to finish off a play. Smith weighed in: “That just comes with putting the pads on. I have hardly ever been on any team where when the pads come on, it might not be the first day, but before long you’re going to have some skirmishes.”
>>> OLB Whitney Mercilus was working 101 against LT Duane Brown today. It didn’t go very well for Mercilus, but going up against a first team All-Pro can only help him get better.
>>> DeVier Posey might not be able to practice as he rehabs his torn achilles. But he can work on his hands like this:
>>> Speaking of Brown, Antonio Smith had some rave reviews about the left tackle: “I think Duane is the best tackle in the league. I have watched him develop over these years and I don’t see nobody holding a real candle to him right now…He really hates to lose and he tries to perfect everything that he do.”
>>> Oh yeah…and don’t tell DE J.J. Watt his numbers are bound to regress. “Anybody sitting behind a desk or talking to a camera can say whatever they like. I’m just going to go out here and put my work in every single day. I’m going to do what I do and people can say whatever they want about me. They can say I’m the best in the world, they can say I’m the worst in the world. I could literally not care any less.”
