On In The Loop with Nick and Lopez Nick gives his 2013 NFL Power Rankings of all 32 teams.

2013 NFL Power Rankings

32- Oakland Raiders…
This team was AWFUL last year and somehow got worse at the most important position, QB, downgrading from Carson Palmer to Matt Flynn…
They have ONE rookie –DJ Hayden–that has any chance of making an impact this year…
6 guys on their starting front 7 are other teams cast offs !…
Their only pro bowl capable players-McFadden and Woodson-are either injury prone or 40 years old.
31- Jacksonville Jaguars
Their best case scenario is Gabbert gets hurt, because Henne is CLEARLY the superior player, as he displayed against the Texans last year…
Blackmon is out the first 4 games which is disastrous for their offense…
Their head coach, Gus Bradley, has NEVER been a head coach at any level…
They have the league’s worst home field advantage…
30- Cleveland Browns
Hey! At least you have Joe Haden and Joe Thomas. Two guys who legitimately might be the best in the league at their positions, and maybe Trent Richardson will be great, but that’s about it. I suppose DQwell Jackson is really good as well.
Past that, you’re screwed. So let’s talk about silliness of drafting a tackle at #1, because it rarely is a good use of resources.
29- Tennessee Titans
Everyone crushes Jake Locker, and he’s not any good, but he’s not the problem in Tennessee! That would be the defense…
Titans D allowed a league leading 29 points per game last year!…
And they didn’t address it in the draft, spending their first 2 picks on a Guard and a WR and their biggest addition in free agency on defense was Bernard Pollard? C’mon now, that defense isn’t going to be any better.
28- Buffalo Bills
Quick! Tell me the best player offensive on the Bills other than CJ Spiller. Yeah, you probably can’t. That’s because after Spiller they don’t have any difference makers…
Kevin Kolb isn’t any better than Ryan Fitzpatrick and 1st round pick EJ Manuel is AT LEAST a year from being ready, so how do they score points?
On defense, they SHOULD be good, but they SHOULD’VE been good on D last year, and they still were bottom 7 in points allowed, and the defense never seemed to gel…
Can anyone see them getting past 6 wins?
27- New York Jets
Here’s the thing with the Jets, I don’t think Sanchez is as AWFUL as everyone else does, but it doesn’t matter. Their opening slate is BRUTAL and if they start off 1-5 or so, Geno Smith will take over almost no matter what, and that will be a DISASTER…
I’m not anti-Geno like everyone seems to be, but he’s not ready, and NY is just the worst place for him to grow.
Also, their RB depth chart is HILARIOUS. Ivory! Goodson! Bilal Powell!…
Which is all a shame because I LOVED the Sheldon Richardson pick and I love their defense as a whole.
26- Arizona Cardinals
Hey look! An NFC team makes it’s debut!…
I want to like the Cardinals, I really do. They’ve got an All Pro corner in Peterson, I love Darnell Dockett and Larry Fitzgerald, and their special teams should be GREAT with Mathieu and Peterson, PLUS, Carson Palmer–with all his flaws–is anENORMOUS upgrade over their QB disastpiece from last year…
BUT, they have no running game, tightened or linebackers and more importantly their offensive line is an absolute joke.
25- San Diego Chargers
Is the myth of Phillip Rivers finally dead now? Maybe he’s hurt, maybe he’s not, but he hasn’t been good since 2010, and he was the only thing that made that offense tick…
Also, this another team with a new head coach-Mike McCoy- who has NEVER been a head coach at any level…
They’ve got and excellent safety–Eric Weddle–but he’s the only real difference maker on defense and their big offseason acquisition was Dwight Freeney–who looked completely out of place in Indy’s 3-4–and he will be playing in the 3-4!…
Also, maybe the worst pair of corners in the league. This is a 6 win team at best…
24- Philadelphia Eagles
I want to believe in the Eagles, Chip Kelly and Mike Vick, I really do. Mike Vick from 2010 + Chip Kelly’s offense could be SO fun…
BUT, this team was an absolute joke last year. This team was 29th in points scored AND 29th in points allowed last year, AND tied for last in turnovers…
Expecting a team THAT inept to compete for a playoff spot, as some are, is simply too optimistic, especially with the only major change being at head coach…
By the way, Chip Kelly could be a train wreck at the NFL level, I’m not predicting it, but it’s certainly possible.
23- Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had the worst head coach in a decade and the worst QB play in the NFL last year. Just replacing Crennel and Cassel/Quinn with league average performers would’ve been worth 4 wins last year…
Instead, they replaced them with slightly, just slightly, better than league average guys in Andy Reid at Matt Cassel…
Plus, they’ve got the best RB not named Adrian Peterson in Jamaal Charles and underrated guys in Brandon Flowers and Dwayne Bowe…
But, anyone picking the Chiefs to make the playoffs is crazy. This is an 8 win team at absolute best, more likely 6 or 7.
22- Tampa Bay Bucs
I want to believe in Josh Freeman, I really do. He’s on 25 and he was really good the first 2/3s of last year, but I just can’t do it…
Also, I LOVE their secondary and if Revis is the Revis of old, then he’s a steal, but who exactly is going to get pressure on the QB for Tampa?…
Only Oakland and Jacksonville had fewer sacks than Tampa’s 27 last year and they did NOTHING to improve their pass rush…
Plus, I think Greg Schiano is a maniac and I like rooting against him.
21- Detroit Lions
The Lions winning only 4 games last year was a complete atrocity and embarrassment, and one man deserves 80% of the blame- Jim Schwarz…
Schwarz is a complete clown and the worst coach in the NFL, this is not a debatable point…
Also, you wonder which Matt Stafford you’re going to get–because last year he was careless with the ball and his mechanics and cost his team games, but as far as pure talent goes, he’s top 8 in the league…
Reggie Bush and a healthy Mikel Leshore should help the running game and we know how great Megatron is. He doesn’t need to improve, if he can simply maintain his level from the past 2 years he’s on a Jerry Rice/Randy Moss pace…
All that plus the D Line should make this a 9 or 10 win team, but thanks to Schwarz they’ll likely top out at 7 or 8.
20- Chicago Bears
Everyone points to the 7-1 start for the Bears, but that was misleading…
All year they beat 2 teams with a winning record: The Colts in Luck’s first game ever and the Vikings late in the year…
We know who the Bears are-a team with a bunch of guys who used to be elite and now are between kind of good and really good but with just 2 great players- Peanut Tillman and Brandon Marshall…
Plus a QB is actually incredibly consistent year to year, just not game to game. cutler has had a QB rating between 81 & 88 every year of career but one and who will singlehandedly win you 1 game a year and lose you 2 more…
The Bears will be the definition of an average NFL team that throws one game away…
19- St Louis Rams
I like everything about this team, but they just feel a year away…
They arguably have the best D Line in the NFC and they improved immediately via the draft with Tavon Austin and Alec Ogletree and the RGIII trade will continue paying dividends next season…
Their offensive line is a big question mark but Jake Long should help out considerably…
But they don’t have a running game, Isaiah pead their 2nd round pick is suspended to start the season and I’m not sure I trust Bradford just yet…
In a weaker division maybe the Rams could surprise some people, but this feels like a year the team improves even of their record doesn’t…
18- Cincinnati Bengals
Overvalued team alert!
Yes, Geno Atkins is GREAT, and the Bengals D Line as a whole is outstanding and I like the addition of James Harrison…
So, why do I have the Bengals this far down the list? Well, because their QB isn’t in the top 15 in the league and their coach isn’t in the top 30, and those spots kind of matter…
PLUS, they weren’t as good as you think last year: They started the year 3-5 and 2 of those wins were against the Browns and Jags, and when they won 7 of 8 to close the season, 5 of those wins were against the Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers, Eagles and the Ravens in Week 17 when they were resting everyone…
And THEN they couldn’t beat a limp Texans team in the playoffs…
So, no, I’m not one of the crazies putting the Bengals in the Super Bowl.
17- Indianapolis Colts
REGRESSION TO THE MEAN alert!…
This team was OUTSCORED last year by 30 points. 20 teams, TWENTY! Had a better point differential!…
Plus, they lose their OC and we have no idea if Chuck Pagano is a good head coach or not…
They played 9 games decided by a touchdown or less, and won 8 of them! 8 and 1 in close games!…
I could go on and on, but the Colts were a 7-9 team last year that somehow went 11-5…
And yes they made some improvements this offseason, even if they overspent doing it, but this is a 9 win team…
16- Miami Dolphins
This team was better than you think last year… They were 7-9 with 2 losses in OT and 4 losses to the Texans, 49ers and Patriots…
Plus, Ryan Tannehill is probably better than you think he is…
And more than anything the Dolphins went out and spent this offseason, and while they certainly overspent and will regret it in a few years, this year it should pay off…
Miami got either the best or second best WR, ILB, OLB and CB available in free agency…
The Dolphins are your surprise AFC playoff team…
15- Minnesota Vikings
Can Adrian Peterson duplicate the best season any running back has had, maybe in the history of the league? I don’t know, but if he can’t, then the Vikings won’t return to the playoffs…
I like what the Vikings did in the draft but I don’t know how much that will help them this season…
But, more than anything, I simply don’t think Christian Ponder is any good and I don’t think he’s leading a team to the playoffs 2 years in a row…
14- New York Giants
You’re going to see a trend with these next 3 teams and that’s because slotting them is almost impossible…
Honesty moment, I have no clue what happened with the Giants last year, like none whatsoever…
They have a great D Line but hardly created any pressure and they have a suspect secondary but were still third in the NFC in plus/minus…
Maybe nothing happened other than a brutal schedule where they lost 7 times but only once to a bad team, losing to Philly by 2 before the wheels fell off for the Eagles…
Eli was exactly who he’s been in the regular season for the past 4 years and the Giants don’t seem worried because they didn’t make any major additions…
This team could win 8 games or 11 games, I just don’t know.
13- Washington Redskins
EVERYTHING about this team was predicated on RGIII not just being the best rookie QB last year, but the best QB in football and an enormous running threat…
And I just don’t know how RGIII will look post-knee surgery and how the read option will do in year 2, but I do know if he slows down even a little bit then Alfred Morris isn’t nearly as effective and everything stops working for them…
Getting Carriker and certainly Orakpo back is huge, but I can’t see them being better than they were set year, and remember they had to win 7 in a row to close the year to make the playoffs.
12- Dallas Cowboys
Here’s an unpopular fact: Tony Romo had his worst season as a starter and STILL was one of the 12 best QBs in football. He completed 65% of his passes, threw for almost 5K yards and had the most come from behind 4th quarter wins of any QB in football! He simply turned the ball over too much…
Also, the Cowboys had a simply BRUTAL schedule last year and didnt lose to a bad team once all season. And had they won in week 17, they win the division…
Dez Bryant is turning into a star and the defense will be better with the departure of Rob Ryan…
This is a 10 win team and that should be enough for the brutally difficult and log jammed NFC East…
11- Carolina Panthers
Sleeper team alert!
Simply put, this is a bet on Cam Newton…
He was superb over the 2nd half of last season and the Panthers won 5 of 6 to finish the year… And overall, they finished 6 and 3 with Cam having a QB rating north of 95 6 times and over 110 3 times…
This is my biggest gamble in all the rankings, and it’s the one I will get the most flak for, but I think Cam this year can do for the Panthers what RGIII did for the Redskins last year…
10- New Orleans Saints
This team lost it’s head coach for the year and back up head coach for the first part of the season and was fighting with the commissioner all season and STILL found a way to win 7 games…
The defense was terrible and it probably wont be any better next season but Kenny Voccarro should help a little bit, but I don’t care… Drew Brees and Sean Payton together mean you win 10 games minimum, that is a fact until proven otherwise…
9- New England Patriots
If Tom Brady were to go down this would be a bottom 7 team in the league, but with Brady, I’ve got them in the Top 10…
They’re praying Danny Amendola doesn’t get concussed and Gronkowski, somehow, doesn’t get injured again, because they have precisely ZERO receiving threats after those two…
Also, I know some people think Stevan Ridley is some really good running threat, but that’s nonsense. He’s looked good because defenses are paralyzed by Brady…
Plus, they won’t expect to get any major contributions for their draft picks this year…
This is the first year in a decade you can’t even make the case that the Pats are the best team in the AFC…
8- San Francisco 49ers
The defense is dominant with a healthy Justin Smith, but his health worries me…
The offense is prolific with a working read option and healthy Kaepernick, but both of those worry be greatly…
Here’s the thing on the Niners, they absolutely could win the Super Bowl, but they also could see Kaepernick’s read option be less effective and he could miss a few games because he subjects himself to hits–and now they don’t have a competent backup–and it could go off the rails…
7- Baltimore Ravens
Joe Flacco was great on the playoff run, no doubt. BUT…
We have 80 games of evidence to tell us this: Joe Flacco is a downright average regular season QB…
Plus, the Ravens lose their emotional leaders on defense, Anquan Boldin and a bunch of other contributors…
Now, they get Ladarius Webb back and somehow lucked into Elvis Dumervil, but don’t discount the losses plus a bit of a Super Bowl hangover…
This is a playoff team, but not a 11 or 12 win team…
6- Pittsburgh Steelers
I just can’t see Big Ben and Mike Tomlin missing the playoffs in consecutive years, and in fact I think they’ll be much this year, and it’s not like they were awful last year…
Their OLine will be much better and I don’t think the loss of Wallace will hurt them too badly…
Todd Haley and Big Ben have a year more of time working together, which is critical and Leveon Bell should help the running game…
This is another out on a limb pick, but a lot of people have the Bengals up here and the Steelers in the teens, and that’s just crazy to me.
5- Houston Texans
We’ve dissected this team all offseason, but lets be real for a moment here: The Texans biggest concerns are CB and NT depth and questions at RT…
In other words, no glaring enormous holes or worries…
You’ve got a top 5 RB, LT, WR, LB and the best defensive player in football…
In other words, this team will make the conference title game–at least– unless the QB pees down his leg, again. We shall see.
4- Atlanta Falcons
Is the defense good enough to win a Super Bowl? That’s the real question here, right?…
Atlanta was bottom 10 in yards allowed but somehow top 5 in points allowed. In other words, a lot of bending, not breaking and some luck…
But, who are the playmakers on defense? Picking up Osi and Asante might help, but not that much…
So why are they ranked this high? Because they have the best all around offense in the NFL, with weapons-really good weapons-absolutely everywhere…
Left tackle is a bit of a worry, but if the Falcons don’t score close to 28 ppg again it’ll be a big upset.
3- Denver Broncos
The loss of Dumervil will hurt, but this was a team that won 11 straight to finish the year and was a Hail Mary away from probably winning the Super Bowl…
Von Miller’s pending suspension isn’t irrelevant and Peyton was less than sharp in the playoff game, but this team was spectacular after the first five weeks and they ADDED Wes Welker and DRC in the secondary along with Terrence Knighton on the D Line…
If they’re not the top seed in the AFC for a second straight year it’ll be a minor upset…
2- Green Bay Packers
The Packers played ONE bad game all year–ONE!  A blowout loss to the Giants, aside from that they either won or were right in every game all year, until they couldn’t figure out the read option in the playoffs…
But, honestly, more than anything, this is about Aaron Rodgers…
Since winning the Super Bowl Rodgers is completing 68% of his passes, has thrown for almost 9K yards, has a QB rating of an absurd 115 and has an even more absurd 84 to 14 TD to INT ratio. 84 to 14!!!!
I’m not terribly overwhelmed by what they did this offseason, but Eddie Lacy might help a bit. But it doesn’t matter…
If you have Aaron Rodgers you’re a Super Bowl favorite.
1- Seattle Seahawks
Where is the hole? They have a young QB who is turning into a super star, if he’s not already, a top 5 RB, just added Percy Harvin to the WR corps, a dominant O Line, and quite simply the best defense in football, hands down…
You realize they have, maybe, the best corner in the game and he’s not the best member of his own secondary?!? That’s Earl Thomas…
If the Packers were to play the Seahawks, I’d pick the Packers because I never pick against Aaron Rodgers, but the Seahawks are the better team…
In fact the Seahawks are the best team.
