ESPYS: Johnny Manziel Named College Athlete Of The Year
HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel won the category for College Athlete of the Year, despite recent controversy surrounding him Wednesday evening.
In fact, Manziel beat out the likes of Baylor basketball star Brittney Griner for the honor. As the athlete enjoys yet another accolade and trophy, Manziel will now turn his attention to the upcoming season with Texas A&M, a school that houses a football team ready to build upon their athletic successes in the upcoming year.
Despite recent small but poignant backlash, Manziel helped lead the Aggies to the national spotlight with an upset win over eventual national champions Alabama.
He was nationally recruited out of high school as a dual-threat quarterback and in 2012 debuted for the Aggies as a “redshirt” freshman.
After breaking numerous NCAA Division I FBS and SEC records, Manziel went on to become the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy as well as the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
