FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) — Fort Bliss officials say they will make an important announcement regarding the future of the West Texas Army base, the nation’s largest installation by land area.

Fort Bliss spokesman Maj. Joe Buccino says there would be a “major announcement” Tuesday morning. He says the base had scheduled a news conference last week but due the importance of the event, they decided to wait for higher ranking officers from Washington D.C. for the announcement.

Buccino would not release more details.

Due to the planned reduction of the Army, Fort Bliss stands to lose one of its four brigade combat teams. However, that loss will be compensated by growth in the remaining combat teams and the base gaining a third anti-missile battery and hosting an Air Force training center.
