HOUSTON (CBS Houston) – Arian Foster would welcome a repeat of his 2010 performance and could have the chance if the Texans signed his former teammate and blocking fullback. The Texans have expressed interest in signing the free agent Vonta Leach, who has said playing for Houston again would be “a storybook ending.” The All-Pro Foster would welcome a reunion of the Leach/Foster tandem once again if circumstances prevailed.
“Obviously, I have played with Vonta before and I know his game and we work well together. He’s one of the best fullbacks in the league, if not the best. We just signed Greg Jones and that’s what the NFL is all about. It’s about competition. I’m not sure if [the Texans] will make that move, but if they do, it will be a competition during camp,” Foster told FoxSports.com.
Both Foster and Leach were on the Texans roster together during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. In 2010, Foster ran for a career-high 1616 yards, scored 16 rushing touchdowns, and averaged 4.9 yards per carry behind the Leach. Both Foster and Leach earned All-Pro honors that season. After the season, Leach’s contract expired and he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens.
Leach was released in June when he and the Ravens could not reach an agreement to restructure his contract. If the Texans were to sign Leach, their salary cap would be a huge hurdle unless Leach agreed to sign a deal for the league minimum.
“I’m a good friend of Vonta’s, but at the end of the day we’re just trying to get wins, so whatever is best for the team, I am for,” Foster said.
Foster, who suffered a calf strain in OTAs, is recovering and is expected back in time for Texans training camp which begins July 26.
