HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Eleven-year-old San Antonio native Sebastien de la Cruz is learning what it means to have “haters”.

After he answered the call to sing the National Anthem before Game 3 of the NBA Finals due to country singer Darius Rucker cancelling at the last minute, buzz surrounding his performance surfaced and he immediately garnered thousands of fans as well as less then friendly folks who did not care for his rendition.

de la Cruz who seems to be a confident and loving boy, said that he knew that his choice to enter into music would cause a stir: “When I started mariachi, I knew there was gonna be a lot of politics,” he said Wednesday. “And I’m just a proud American, to be honest,” he told media outlets this week.

Despite the criticism and racist posts that have been written about de la Cruz’ National Anthem rendition, there are many who love him and cherish the talent he has at such a young age. In fact, he has learned to look above the “haters”: “With the racist remarks, it was just people how they were raised. My father and my mama told me you should never judge people how they look,” he added.

After his performance, de la Cruz received backlash about his performance that was written on various social media outlets; however, for every person who “hates on” this singing hopeful, there seem to be those who are offering de la Cruz love and support.

Even San Antonio’s Mayor Julián Castro took to his own Twitter page to “sing his own notes” of praise for the pint-sized crooner:

Nevertheless, the former “America’s Got Talent” star is seemingly setting the negativity aside and focusing on shaping his talent and determination to sing. It’s focus that can truly be a learning pearl for all of us as we all walk through life with all of its sharps and flats.

Check out de la Cruz singing the National Anthem… what do you think?
