HISD To Offer Free Meals During Summer

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) The Houston Independent School District’s free summer meal program begins June 11 and more than 200 HISD school campuses will be participating.

According to HISD officials, children ages one to 18 will be able to enjoy a healthy breakfast meals and lunch meals at no cost through mid-July. “The start of the program will be celebrated with kick-off parties at Bonham and Kashmere Gardens elementary schools,” added HISD officials.

“The ‘Summer Food, Summer Fun’ kick-off parties on June 11 and 12 will include giveaways, music, games and a special visit from Ace the nutrition mascot,” added district authorities.

It is not a stipulation that children be enrolled in summer school or show proof of income to partake of the free meals. Adults wishing to participate in the program can do so by purchasing breakfast for $2 and lunch for $3.25.

HISD officials also add that each mean is packed nutritionally analyzed and balanced to ensure children receive the vitamins, minerals, and calories needed to maintain healthy and vital.

“Last summer, HISD Food Services served nearly 1 million free meals to Houston-area children,” according to HISD.
