HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Authorities closed the West Loop in both directions Tuesday morning, due to a big rig accident on the Highway 59 exit ramp.
Because of that traffic accident, residual effects of traffic congestion brought commuters to a standstill.
The accident happened after 6 a.m. on the Southwest Freeway exit ramp. Officials also closed Westpark Drive in both directions. The traffic was forcibly routed off the freeway at the Westpark exit on the northbound lanes.
Authorities further closed the exit ramp from the Southwest Freeway to the southbound lanes of the West Loop just after 7am. Traffic was backed up for miles.
The driver of a rig was transporting Methyl Alcohol and overturned the truck he was driving. Reports indicate that he was in an ambulance, being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Additional reports indicate that there were no other vehicles involved in the accident.
***UPDATE 9: 40 a.m., CST ***
The Houston Fire Department continued to the work the scene late into Tuesday morning.
