GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — Police say an 8-year-old boy has drowned in a North Texas lake while swimming with friends.

Grand Prairie police spokesman Lyle Gensler says Aaron Starks of Mesquite was swimming on the Cedar Hill side of Joe Pool Lake southwest of Dallas on Monday afternoon. The boy was playing in waist- to shoulder-deep water with friends at Swim Beach when he went under.

The boy’s mother called 911 after a friend told her the boy had gone under. He was below the surface for an estimated 30 minutes. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, though he was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gensler says it was the first drowning this year at the lake.
