HOUSTON (CBS Houston) A 15-year-old died after a gun accidentally discharged inside a car in west Harris County Tuesday evening.

Reports indicate that several teens were in a  sedan at the time the gun went off, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Officials stated that the group of teens drove the injured teen to Texas Children’s Hospital in Katy so that the teen could be treated for his injuries; however their efforts proved to be too little, too late. The teen was already dead.

Authorities further stated that it appears as if the gun accidentally discharged while in the hands of one of the teens sitting in the back seat. The bullet struck the 15-year-old victim who was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Officials continue their investigation of the case.
