CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — The Port of Corpus Christi has approved $15 million to help build a replacement for the Harbor Bridge.

Commissioner Judy Hawley says Tuesday’s vote means the area has reached the target $100 million mark in commitments to replace the bridge.

State engineers say Corpus Christi needs a larger, more salt-resistant span at a cost that could reach $1 billion.

Texas Transportation Commission chairman Ted Houghton has said he wanted local pledges of $100 million before the state commits to full funding. About $291 million in federal funds have been earmarked for the project.

It’s the second major financial commitment this month to replace the Harbor Bridge, which was completed in 1959. The board of the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization on May 2 pledged $32 million.
