HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Despite a rain-soaked track, thoroughbred “Orb” won the 139th installment of the Kentucky Derby Saturday.

“Orb”‘s victory gave trainer Shug Mcgaughey his first Kentucky Derby victory: “I’ve always dreamed of this day and it finally came,” Mcgaughey said in a statement.

The Derby had a maximum 20-horse field, which was reduced to 19 Friday morning after “Black Onyx” was scratched due to a chipped bone in his front left ankle.

The 1¼-mile race was televised from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.  EST. The purse was $2,199,800, with $1,439,800 to the winner.

Despite speed and agility from the other competing thoroughbreds, it was “Orb” who prevailed as champion and aligned the pockets of last-minute bettors with additional money and a win at Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Orb’s winning time was  2:02.89.
