2013 NFL DRAFT RUNNING DIARY

Goodell loves using national tragedies as a way to stop the crowd from mercilessly booing him…

Really can’t believe KC is not only taking a lineman with the 1st overall pick, but they’re taking the other lineman?!? My team is so lost, at basically all times…

The draft should start with the #1 overall pick being announced, giving the top team the 10 minute window is an absurd part of the draft…

Jay Glazer is the best NFL reporter out there and it’s not close… He never floats BS, seems to be partying or doing MMA stuff all the time, and then just BOOM breaks all the major stories, Eric Fisher just being the latest…

And the first two picks of the draft our LTs… which is quite simply the most overrated position in football. Here’s the thing about tackles in the NFL: You can’t compete with awful tackles, you have no shot, but you absolutely don’t need elite tackles to be a great team, in fact most of the great teams of past decade have had mediocre offensive lines on the edges.

The Raiders first round draft history is simply hilarious. They’ve got to be in the poll position as the worst franchise in pro sports. Mayock just said they have 45 MILLION in dead money this year. That is insane…

I’m a little worried that Al Davis’ brother, who appears to be 110 years old, might not get this pick in in time. It looks like he’s having trouble understanding this phone call, and the clock is ticking…

The NFL Network does not need Marshall Faulk on this set, and in fact he’s, thus far, a major distraction…

So the Dolphins really are going for this thing, huh? I wouldn’t mind what they were doing, if their quarterback wasn’t Ryan Tannehill… Still, I bet they have a better record than Indy next year.

I love Dion Jordan. Miami is going to be a super competitive team, if Tannehill can just be average. If Tannehill is good, they will make the playoffs. So, in other words, they won’t make the playoffs but they’ll challenge for 10 wins…

Keep in mind, the Dolphins still have another 2nd rounder to trade for Branden Albert if they want to shore up their LT position…

Eagles desperately need help on the line, and they make the right pick there. He’s the first LT pick that I like for the team that made it. If Vick can hold on to the ball, Eagles could very well be a playoff team next year…

During the commercial break Mario Chalmers juts pulled off a pretty sweet pass fake/scoop layup and it should’ve been an and-1. It’s knotted at 61 with a quarter and a half left in Milwaukee…

I know nothing about Ezekial Ansah, the Lions latest pick. Evidently he never played football until 2010, and he’s from Ghana, and that’s all I got… I know he was widely considered a top 10 pick, but I don’t watch BYU football so whaddya want…

I do know this… The Lions are DEDICATED to that defensive line. They lost Avril and Vandenbosch and so they get a DE to replace him, but it felt like they had some other needs…

The Browns just took Mingo, the guy who I think is most likely not to pan out of all the projected top 15 guys, but what do I know. I do know that the treasonous Communist, John Lopez, loves Mingo…

Thru 6 picks, every single guy taken has either focused on protecting the quarterback, or sacking the quarterback…

Make that 7 picks in a row of guys who are either about protecting the QB or getting to the QB with the Cardinals selection of Jonathan Cooper…

When was the last time an interior lineman was taken this high? Hold on… lemme check… Well, I can’t find any interior lineman EVER taken this high, so, the Cardinals have that going for them, I guess…

So Tavon goes 8th, so even if the Texans wanted to trade up to the 9th pick (they didn’t) it wouldn’t have mattered…

I do like the Rams getting weapons for Sam Bradford, but I’m just not as certain on Tavon as everyone else seems to be…

NEVERMIND, IGNORE ALL OF MY RESERVATIONS ON TAVON AUSTIN! He has an accent straight out of The Wire and pure Bodymore, Murdaland. He’s now my favorite player in the NFL.

I love this pick for the Jets, but I’m the biggest Dee Milliner fan you’re going to find, but still, they’ll have the best CB duo (again) in the league in a couple years with Milliner and Cromartie.

Jason Whitlock just dedicated his ENTIRE draft column to Dee Milliner’s watch…

Rich Eisen might choke out Marshall Faulk before the show is over. Faulk is adding nothing, and keeps interrupting him. NFL Network has been great, but Faulk is an absolutely unnecessary addition.

That was pretty freaking sweet… NFL Network goes to Afghanistan to ask a soldier who is a Titans fan who he wants the Titans to take… He says Chance Warmack, and he got it right!

I’m pretty sure the 2 highest drafted guards in the last 20 years of the NFL draft were BOTH taken this year with Cooper and Warmack…

I guess the AFC South really is drafting with JJ Watt in mind, huh? Titans need help all over the place, they could’ve taken Shariff Floyd, which would’ve filled a HUGE need, but they go with an interior offensive lineman… Interesting.

Another offensive lineman! Chargers take DJ Fluker, to fill one of their many needs. I like Fluker, and this might fill their biggest need. Also, if Rivers has something left, and I’m not sure he does, this maybe gives him a chance to succeed, but they need some difference makers.

Now the Raiders—who might’ve drafted Shariff Floyd at 3 if they hadn’t traded down—can get him at 12 if they want him. Wow. He’s the biggest slide of the draft so far.

Or, I guess they didn’t love Shariff Floyd… As they draft DJ Hayden at 12…

What a story for DJ Hayden! Unbelievable that he ends up going top 15 after nearly dying on the practice field, and coming out of the U of H. Wow. So great.

In a draft that has been ALL about protecting the QB or getting to the QB or catching the ball or knocking down passes, the two biggest slides of the 1st round so far, Lotuleli and Floyd, are two guys who excel against the run.

And finally a run stopper is taken as Sheldon Richardson—who is an absolute freak athlete—is taken by Rex Ryan with the “Revis pick.”

The Jets need help EVERYWHERE on offense, but Rex Ryan can’t help himself, and, for what it’s worth, he got 2 of my 3 favorite defensive players in this draft.

Carolina gets help where it needs it, up the middle of the defense, with Star Lotuleli… but here’s my worry… I’m ALWAYS skeptical of big guys who played at small schools. I always wonder if a DT that dominated at Utah will translate to the NFL…

ON SECOND THOUGHT… I just remembered that Utah is now in the Pac 12, so he faced legit competition, so ignore that previous bullet point…

But good job by the Panthers with their past 2 first round picks (last year they took ILB Luke Kuechly) solidifying the middle of their defense. Now, if they can just give Cam another receiving weapon and some secondary help, they could just to the top of the AFC South in a couple years…

Saints add the consensus best safety in the draft and help their absolute biggest weakness in the secondary. This pick makes as much sense as any pick for any team all draft…

Finally a QB is taken… and it’s EJ Manuel? Those silly Bills. What a bizarre pick. The Bills are destined to be bad forever, I guess…

And, to be honest, I’m not saying that EJ Manuel will never be good, but he’s a HUGE project, and I just don’t know that he’s worth a first round pick. Especially for a team with a dozen needs like the Bills have…

The Steelers are going to Shariff Floyd, aren’t they? A guy with top 5 talent, of course, the Steelers will get him at 17, right?

I guess not… As they take Jarvis Jones, who makes just as much sense… And he can step into the James Harrison role pretty seamlessly, right?

The Steelers scare me in 2013, for the record…

And the scariest team in 2013, the 49ers, just traded up… Are they going to swoop up Shariff Floyd?

No, they get a Eric Reid, a tremendous player, and he will step in for Dashon Goldson. Man, the 49ers are scary…

The Cowboys are a mess… moving back 13 spots to in the 1st and only picking up the 74th pick? That’s terrible value, in my opinion.

Smart pick by the Giants… They have plenty of skill position players and they’re very solid in the front 7 defensively, but Eli is ALWAYS on the ground… So they do the smart thing and take the best OT available and take Justin Pugh from, where, SYRACUSE!

And the Bears take the same route as the Giants, except they needed help elsewhere as well. But I can’t blame the Bears for trying to protect Jay Cutler, who, much like Eli, seems to ALWAYS be getting knocked on his ass.

The Bengals now have the 2nd best TE corps in the NFL—behind the Patriots, obviously—by adding Tyler Eifert, when they already have Jermaine Gresham….

For my money, this is a perfect pick for a team with a limited quarterback. Get Andy Dalton  as many guys he can throw to on short routes, and getting the best TE in the draft does that for them…

Atlanta trades up to get a corner, it’s gotta be a corner, right?

And of course it is… Falcons select Desmond Trufant at 22… Maybe a bit of a reach, but they HAD to get a corner in the 1st round, and they didn’t think they could wait until 22.

Finally, someone mercifully takes Shariff Floyd, who I thought would’ve been picked by 15 at the latest. I don’t think this was the biggest need for the Vikings, but he does fill a need, and is an enormous value at this spot.

I wanted to know what the heck happened that made Sharrif Floyd drop so far?

3 picks until the Texans are on the clock, and they should have their pick of damn near the best player in the whole draft at multiple positions of need (ILB, WR) and maybe a big move (QB?)…

Colts take a big shot with Warner. He’s a mini-project when it comes to playing 3-4 OLB, but he can get to the QB and fills a big position of need for Indy.

One pick until the Texans draft, and you’ve got Ogletree, T’eo, all the WRs except Austin and safety Matt Elam ALL still available… Wow. Rick Smith is going to have one HELLUVA decision to make…

The pick here that would scare me the most is Eddie Lacy for the Packers… Could complete their offense…

But, no, they take Datone Jones, a DE from UCLA. I thought they would go Matt Elam if they went defense, but now, the Texans have the pick of essentially everyone they could’ve hoped for…

This draft really couldn’t have fallen better for the Texans… There’s been a run on positions (OL and DL) that they likely were never going to take in the first round, and no one has touched any WRs aside from Tavon Austin… All the ILBs are still there… All the QBs but EJ Manuel are still there… There’s even a really good safety available. Rick Smith couldn’t have imagined he’d have this many options.

Here’s what I really like about the Deandre Hopkins pick… Rick Smith could have ANY WR he wanted, and he took him. Also, as Mayock said, he dominated LSU.

Also, Deandre was the alleged floor pooper and they didn’t let that stop them…

With all that said, man, I would’ve liked Alec Ogletree right there…

Broncos fill a HUGE need at interior DL… This is a need more than a best player available pick. They signed some older DTs this offseason, but he gives them depth and youth at the position. Ferocious front 7 for Denver.

Patriots trade down, as always, and they get a TON of picks… So the Vikings move up to get… Corrdarrelle Patterson.

So the Vikings do all that and STILL don’t draft T’eo…

And the Patriots, I understand why they would say yes to that deal, you got 2 extra top 100 picks (basically)… but Tom Brady is freaking 36 years old this season, don’t you need to improve the team as best as you can right NOW?

Rams take one of my favorite players in the draft, Alec Ogletree. If Sam Bradford is any good, the Rams are going to be very competitive with Jeff Fisher at the helm, even with Seattle and San Fran in the same division.

Meanwhile, Mike Mayock, might kill Rich Eisen if he mentions Te’o one more time…

And the Cowboys take some Center from Wisconsin at 31, who nobody had going before the 3rd round. Cowboys have had the worst draft of anyone thus far.

Baltimore gets a steal at 32 with Matt Elam as the heir apparent to Ed Reed. As always, the Ravens draft as well as, if not better than, anybody.
