HOUSTON (CBS Houston) - The team formerly known as the Hornets is now officially the New Orleans Pelicans.  Not even 24 hours after the NBA season ended, the team launched its new website and social media accounts. The Hornets website will now redirect users to the new website to http://www.pelicans.com.

“The Pelican is a symbol for our city and region and we’re excited to start a new era in Lousiana basketball history.  This offseason is going to be a special time for the Pelicans,” owner Tom Benson said in a statement.

The pelican is Lousiana’s state bird and a symbol on the state flag.  The Hornets announced the new mascot and team colors in January but made the moniker official Thursday.  Hugo, the Hornets mascot, was given a special farewell tribute in the fourth quarter of the team’s final home game as the Hornets, a 107-89 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
