NEW ORLEANS, La. (CBS Houston) — A New Orleans man was taken into custody after being accused of forcing a child into a hot dryer.

The Times-Picayune reports that 34-year-old Robert Smith put the 10-year-old boy into a dryer and turned it on because the child forgot to turn in documents at school.

An employee at Lawrence Crocker College Preparatory School noticed burn marks on the boy in late October. New Orleans police interviewed the child in December where he told authorities he was whipped with a belt, kicked in the chest and forced into the dryer.

Police tell The Times-Picayune that the child’s burns were “circular and consistent in size with the air ventilation screen located inside the dryer.”

Smith was reportedly watching the child at the time because the mother was in the hospital.

He has been charged with cruelty to a juvenile and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
