HOUSTON (CBS Houston) According to officials, a wrecker driver who stopped to assist with a broken down box truck along Beltway 8  Thursday evening, made a discovery that has led to an investigation.

The Harris County Pct. 5 Constable’s Office stated that around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, a county toll road wrecker driver stopped a box truck on Beltway 8 near Westpark Drive and then found 16 people crammed into the back of the truck.

The box truck’s driver and a passenger in the front took off running. A few of the individuals found in the back of the truck attempted to escape from officials but were apprehended.

The Houston Police Department provided assistance to county officials in tracking down the one person who ran from the back of the truck; however, the driver and passenger who ran away were never located.

According to constables, out of the 16 people in the back, 15 of them were men.

The individuals are suspected to be in the United States illegally.

Officials saw that the individuals were suffering from dehydration and offered water to them.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials also assisted in Thursday’s investigation as the group of questionable individuals were taken into custody.
