HOUSTON (CBS Houston) A suspect was killed after he allegedly wounded a Houston police officer on Houston’s north side.

The incident took place at just after midnight, Monday on Saddle Rock at Sweetwater.

According to HPD officials, the shooting happened after a two-man patrol unit spotted a car moving erratically. After attempting to stop the motorist, they followed the suspect. They saw that the driver did not pull over and drove to the end of the cul-de-sac.

The officers blocked him with their patrol unit. HPD Officer Fikes got out of the car and as he walked over to the suspect, that suspect then opened fire. HPD Officer Jimmy Dodson fired back, killing the suspect at the scene.

Officer Fikes was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is is expected to fully recover from his injuries. Fikes was reportedly shot twice, once in the right forearm and once in the left bicep.

Officials later revealed the suspect as 32-year-old Jared Alvarez. Court records indicate that Alvarez had previously been jailed, facing aggravated robbery and drug charges.

Both Officers Fikes and Dodson have reportedly been with HPD for two years.
