HOUSTON (CBS Houston) An overnight standoff ended peacefully after a man took his girlfriend hostage, armed with a machete.

According to reports, a Houston Police Department SWAT team was called to a northwest side apartment shortly before 1 a.m. Friday after an altercation broke out during a gathering including several of the suspect’s family members. Everyone fled the apartment except for the suspect and his girlfriend.

According to officials, the man had a machete and several knives in the apartment, refusing to allow his girlfriend leave. The suspect and his girlfriend have a history of domestic violence. HPD officers attempted to communicate with the suspect as he held his girlfriend hostage with a device.

Around 7 a.m. the suspect then freed his girlfriend but stayed barricaded in the apartment. Soon after, he finally turned himself over to authorities, and the standoff was resolved peacefully.

HPD also stated that the man now faces kidnapping charges.
