HOUSTON (CBS Houston) A promising student athlete collapsed and died Wednesday, according to investigators.

Students and coaches are left to mourn the loss of the popular football player who attended Pearland’s Glenda Dawson High School.

Seventeen-year-old Falobi Akanbi was playing basketball with friends after school at Silver Lake Elementary Wednesday afternoon.

Akanbi then collapsed and those friends immediately called 911. Upon arrival, paramedics took the teen to Memorial Hermann where he was pronounced dead, investigators stated.

Number 79 on the Dawson Eagles team at Dawson High School, Akanbi was impressive both on as well as off of the field. Standing at 6-feet 5-inches tall and 290 pounds, Akanbi had signed a letter of intent to play football for Montana State and was an honor student in high school.

Friends, school administrators and the community has been reportedly shocked and shaken by the death of the teen. It’s not clear if Akanbi had any pre-existing conditions that may have led to his death.
