MADISONVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Central Texas police officer has been indicted on charges he planted drugs in his ex-wife’s vehicle during a 2011 child custody fight.

A Madison County grand jury on Monday indicted Madisonville police Sgt. Jeffrey A. Covington on charges of delivery of a controlled substance, obstruction or retaliation, and official oppression. Police Chief Chuck May said Tuesday that Covington resigned last week.

Madison County Jail officials did not have information about an attorney for Covington, who’s free on $5,500 bond.

Authorities say a Texas trooper who received information about possible drug transportation and was not aware of the domestic dispute found methamphetamine in Laura Covington’s vehicle. A drug charge against her was later dropped.

The Texas attorney general’s office is prosecuting.

Details on the child custody case weren’t immediately released.
