HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Houston police officers fatally shot a man after that man threatened to kill his infant son with a butcher knife.

The incident happened Wednesday evening at the Woodchase apartment complex located on South Gessner near Westheimer around 6 p.m.

According to police, a neighbor dialed 911 after hearing a woman scream inside one of the units.

Upon arrival, police found a man arguing with a woman. The woman was holding a one-year-old baby and then dropped the baby and went outside. It was then that the man picked up the baby and threatened to kill the child with a large butcher knife.

Despite spending several minutes negotiating with the man to release the baby, the man did not surrender to police and release the infant. Additional reports indicate that the man was trying to light a crack pipe at the time.

A SWAT team arrived on the scene to provide assistance and then the man went into a bathroom in the apartment unit without fully closing the bathroom door. Able to see what the father was doing in the bathroom, officers witnessed the man hold a knife to the baby’s throat. They took no chances on the man harming or possibly killing the baby so a veteran officer discharged his weapon. The man died at the scene.

The man’s identity was not released at the time of this report. Houston police continue to investigate the incident.
