BEXAR COUNTY, Texas (CBS Houston) — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy died after being buried alive in a sand pit by his 5-year-old brother.

KABB-TV reports Wyatt McDaniel died Friday on the family’s horse farm in Bexar County after playing with his little brother.

Bexar County Sheriff’s spokesman Paul Berry says that Logan McDaniel ran for his father for help at Wild Sunday Farm after he was unable to get Wyatt out of the four-foot sand pit. The father, Charles McDaniel, pulled Wyatt out and immediately gave his son CPR. The 7-year-old later died at University Hospital after going into cardiac arrest.

“No one actually saw it,” Berry told the San Antonio Express-News. “Clearly there was an accident with sand. And it appeared as if he suffocated, but that needs to be determined by the medical examiner.”

A family friend called the brothers “best friends” and “inseparable.”

“[W]e’re concerned about Logan, and how he will handle this,” Theresa Chamberlain told the Express-News.

A vigil was held Sunday for Wyatt at Wilderness Oak Elementary School.

“Today signifies the spirit of Wyatt being delivered to heaven,” family friend Kim Hager told KENS-TV.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Child Protective Services are investigating the incident. The medical examiner has performed an autopsy but the results won’t be released until next week.
