CONROE, Texas (CBS Houston/AP) — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy in Southeast Texas has died from injuries he sustained after being attacked by a pit bull.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says the boy, Christian Gormanous, had climbed a chain link fence into a neighbor’s yard near Conroe on Saturday. The dog was chained but somehow managed to attack and bite the boy.

His 9-year-old sister was able to pull the boy to safety and call for help.

“Trinity was able to get the dog off of him; brought her brother back over the fence [and] told her mother the dog had attacked Christian,” family friend Debra Dreyer told KTRK-TV.

The boy was taken to a hospital in nearby Houston where he died from his injuries.

Deputies are investigating the attack but authorities say they don’t expect to file criminal charges.

Neighbors, though, say the dog has been a problem before by previously escaping the owner’s yard.

“We called and called the Humane Society, and they don’t ever do anything about it,” neighbor Michel McDanel told KPRC-TV.

The dog is in the custody of animal control officers.
