HOUSTON (CBS Houston) As the country will honor the life, legacy and mission of peace Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. embarked upon, Houston will commemorate Dr. King with a parade as well as participation in the “National Day of Service” on Monday, January 21, 2013.
Below are ways you can help volunteer your time, efforts and energies right here in Houston on Monday, designated as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Day of Service at Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Location: 2403 Holcombe
Time: 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul assists the community by providing thrift stores that low-cost items and merchandise in them. During Monday’s “Day of Service”, volunteers will have an opportunity to help with operations with the stores. They will be asked to help with merchandise distribution as well as other tasks at the thrift stores.
Houston Food Bank
Location: 535 Portwall
During the “Day of Service” at the Houston Food Bank, volunteers will be asked to help coordinate food boxes and distribution lists.
Clean Up Cypresswood
Location: Kuykendahl and Cypresswood
Time: 9 a.m.
Volunteers are asked to dress for working out side. Trash pick up is what volunteers wil be asked to participate in.
Chung Tai Zen Center of Houston
Location: 12129 Bellaire Blvd
Time: 9:30 a.m.to 2:30 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help arrange flowers for a ceremony as well as duties in the kitchen and gardening areas.
Cane River Gardens Paying It Forward
Location: Julia C. Hester House, 2020 Solo St.
Time: 8 a.m to 1 p.m.
For this “Day of Service” event, volunteers are asked to help restore the garden at Julia C. Hester House.
Support LGBT Homeless Youth
According to data, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth make up 40 percent of homeless and at-risk youth. Volunteers are being asked to donate items to the youth. Toiletries are needed as well as blankets, additional items for grooming, first aid supplies and water.
