MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. (CBS Houston) — A man renovating a historic home found more than 150 human infant bones buried in the cellar.
Todd Maxwell found the 150-year-old bones at the home of Gen. James Ronald Chalmers in Marshall County, Miss., according to WMC-TV.
“We found a little over 150 bone parts in this spot,” Maxwell told the station.
Maxwell made the discovery last week while fixing floorboards in the cellar. The station reports that Chalmers’ children most likely died of Scarlet Fever.
“I could find three grave sites of the children, of the seven children, but I couldn’t find the other four,” Maxwell told WMC-TV.
Chalmers led the Battle of Collierville three different times for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He died in 1898.
