HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office will hold the first Town Hall meeting of the year later this month with the primary focus being school safety.

After officially beginning his second four-year term after taking the oath of office this past Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Garcia recommitted his tenure as sheriff to making the concerns of Harris County residents paramount.

The first town hall meeting of the year will be held Thursday January 24, 2013 and Sheriff Garcia will be joined by: Congressman Gene Green, State Representative Ana E. Hernandez, officials from the Mental Health America of Greater Houston, San Jacinto College Chief of Police William Taylor, the Houston Independent School District Chief of Police, the Galena Park Independent School District Chief of Police, an official from the Sheldon Independent Police and an official from Constable Ken Jones’ Office. Each of these community leaders has made school safety a tremendous priority and will outline an agenda in achieving safety on all Harris County school campuses as well as listen to the questions and concerns from Harris County residents concerning school safety.

Sheriff Garcia says that the upcoming town hall will encourage dialogue about school safety among community leaders and parents/guardians: “In a county with more than four million residents, our number one priority is to maintain safe communities in which we can all be proud to raise our families. Our town hall will focus on an issue that’s been on everyone’s mind recently, school safety. There is nothing more valuable than our children, and as your Sheriff I take that responsibility very serious. Initiating a dialogue between our schools, law enforcement agencies, and the public will help us maintain the safety of our children in and out of the classroom.”
