CBSSports.com – Free agent Lance Berkman has agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal with the Texas Rangers, reports Jon Heyman and Scott Miller of CBSSports.com. The deal also includes a vesting option for 2014 with a $1 million buyout, so Berkman will make a minimum of $11 million with this contract.
Berkman will turn 37 next month, and the odds are pretty good that this would be his final contract as a major leaguer. If so, it’s fitting he ends in the state of Texas. Berkman was born in Waco, Texas, went to Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas, and attended Rice University in Houston before spending his first 11 1/2 big league seasons with the Houston Astros.
Berkman hit .259/.381/.444 with two homers and seven RBI in an injury-riddled campaign last season for St. Louis in which he had only 97 plate appearances.
