HOUSTON (CBS Houston) The city of Houston is known for a multitude of things. When it comes to finding and thriving in that chosen career, the Bayou City beats out the rest.

According to monster.com Houston is one of the top five cities in the country for your career in the new year. With factors such as pay scale,  the relatively low 6.3 percent unemployment rate and 3.9 percent wage growth, Houston is a thriving metropolis and an ideal one for those searching for the perfect career. For many, there is tremendous opportunity for individuals to find professional success in such fields as healthcare, energy and aeronautics.

Named after then-President of the Republic of Texas—former General Sam Houston, Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States of America, and the largest city in the state of Texas.

Houston has also enjoyed other such titles as: “coolest city” by Forbes Magazine and the “fastest growing city” by Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research.

Houston was founded in 1836 on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou and was incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837.
