Offier, Bystander Fatally Shot
HOUSTON (CBS Houston) An officer and a bystander were fatally shot Monday after a chase and a shootout.
According to reports, the shooting was reported around 9 a.m., just outside a business on Bellaire Boulevard. Later, Bellaire police confirmed it was one of their officers who was shot.
The officer who was shot and then transported to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition, was later pronounced dead. An innocent bystander was also struck by bullets from the suspect who gave chase. That bystander died at the scene, according to officials.
Authorities further stated that the shooter was subsequently shot by officers arriving at the scene. The suspect reportedly tried to hide at a neighboring business but was soon taken into custody and sent to the hospital in critical condition.
A witness who saw the chase stated that a truck and the officer followed the Honda into the Maaco shop’s parking lot. When it was clear that the vehicles were not able to go further, the officer left his vehicle to approach the Honda. It was then that several shots were fired, fatally wounding the officer.
The bystander was identified as a Maaco customer but his name was not released at the time of this report.
The suspect who faces several charges, including evading in vehicle and capital murder of a police officer did not have his identity released at the time of this report.
Additional reports indicate that the Bellaire officer who was fatally wounded was with the Bellaire Police Department for over twenty years. He was also married and had children.
