HOUSTON (CBS Houston) A suspected Walmart shoplifter was fatally shot in north Harris County Thursday evening just after 10 p.m.
According to reports, the incident happened at the Walmart located on West Road and the Katy Freeway. Loss prevention officials noticed a group of women taking merchandise off the shelves and stuffing those items into their purses and bags. Soon, an off-duty deputy was alerted of the activity.
After that deputy confronted the group of women at the door, one of the women hit the deputy with her purse. Then the women fled to a car. As the vehicle sped away, the deputy was between the door frame and the driver.
Additional reports stated that the deputy then opened the door and commanded the driver to stop. Instead of stopping the car, the woman put it in drive, revving forward and dragging the deputy. It was then that the deputy fired his weapon as the vehicle sped away.
Although the suspects did get away, Houston police found the car a short time later at a nearby apartment complex. One of the women inside the vehicle was dead from a gunshot wound while another woman was taken into custody.
Authorities continue to investigate the case and review video from inside and outside the Walmart store.
