RICHMOND, Texas (AP) — Hilmar Moore has died at age 92 after serving since 1949 as mayor of the Southeast Texas town of Richmond, near Houston.

Moore’s widow, Evelyn Moore, says her husband died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness.

The Richmond city website says Moore was the nation’s longest-serving mayor of uninterrupted tenure.

The San Antonio native ran cattle on land that had been in the family since 1822. His mother was a member of the prominent Guenther milling family in San Antonio.

The Army Air Corps veteran returned to the area after World War II service in the Pacific. He was appointed to fill an unexpired term in September 1949, when the town had just over 2,000 residents. Today, more than 12,000 residents live in the city 27 miles southwest of Houston.
