HOUSTON (CBS Houston) One person was killed and 11 others were injured after a shuttle bus crashed in the Medical Center on Wednesday.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m. on Holcombe at Braeswood. A shuttle driver lost control of the bus due to an unknown medical condition and crashed the bus. Although additional reports indicate that one of the passengers on the shuttle bus got up and tried to help steer the bus, the bus still crashed into a pole.

A woman who was standing next to the pole became pinned between that pole and the shuttle bus. Desperate efforts were made to push the van off the lady, but those that tried were not able to do it.

The passengers on the bus became trapped as the bus doors locked and stopped functioning. In order for those on the bus to be safely rescued, the doors were pulled open and broken. Those on the bus were taken to safety.

With 17 people on the bus, 11 were taken to area hospitals; the shuttle driver and another passenger suffered the most serious injuries from the shuttle bus accident.

The identity of the woman who died as a result of the accident was not released at the time of this report.

The shuttle bus is used by professionals  employees  of the Medical Center to get around. Authorities continue to investigate the accident.
