HOUSTON (AP) — The Robert A. and Renee E. Belfer Family Foundation has donated $25 million for research on Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The funding was announced Monday by the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The school will share the money with the Baylor College of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The donation will be used to create the Neurodegeneration Consortium. The gift requires the consortium partners to raise $25 million in matching funds by Jan. 1, 2016.

Organizers have already raised $6.5 million.

The Belfer Family Foundation is based in New York City.
