Police Chase Involving Shoplifters Leaves Innocent 16-Year-Old Boy Dead
BAYTOWN, Texas (CBS Houston) – A police chase involving shoplifters turns deadly for an innocent 16-year-old.
It started when Jennifer Rene Jenkins stole pillows and a comforter from a Sears store before getting in a getaway vehicle driven by Shannon Joe Chauncey, according to the Baytown Police Department.
Detectives spotted the vehicle at an Academy parking lot, where they say the couple tried to shoplift more items.
As Jenkins tried to exit the store with the unpaid items, police tried to block them from leaving, but they forcefully crashed into their vehicles before speeding out of the parking lot.
With officers in pursuit, Jenkins did not slow down, striking another vehicle occupied by 17-year old Shay Hollinghead and 16-year old Shawn Williams.
Hollinghead, who was driving, was taken to Hermann Hospital and listed in critical condition. William was killed.
Chauncey and Jenkins fled the scene on foot but were eventually caught by police. They had minor injuries.
Chauncey was charged with two felonies while misdemeanor charges are pending against Jenkins.
KPRC-TV reports that Chauncey was denied bail and is currently in custody.
