HOUSTON (AP) — The sheriff of the most populous county in Texas says eight of his employees have been fired, quit or retired after an internal investigation of sexual misconduct at the county jails.
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia says one former employee had been fired and indicted in February. Another supervisor and four detention officers were fired Friday, while a deputy resigned and a supervisor retired during the yearlong investigation.
Garcia didn’t identify by name the disciplined employees accused of having sexual relations with female inmates in jail laundry rooms. He said, however, that some had been with the sheriff’s office for more than 10 years.
He said more surveillance cameras have been installed to prevent a recurrence of such misconduct.
