HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston attorney’s mistress who was accused of orchestrating three failed attempts to kill her lover’s wife has been sentenced to 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement.

But during a court hearing Friday in Houston, the attorney’s wife objected to the plea deal, saying the woman is a “monster” and should spend the rest of her life in prison.

The mistress, Michelle Gaiser, was to testify at the trial of attorney Jeffrey Stern, which was to begin this week. But prosecutors earlier this week dropped charges against Stern, saying they did not have sufficient evidence.

Stern insisted he had no involvement in the murder attempts. His wife, Yvonne Stern, has said she forgave him for an affair and has supported him throughout the case.
