BRAZORIA COUNTY, Tex. (CBS Houston) – A man forcibly placed under arrest died not long after being subdued by local authorities.
Deputies from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office were called after the niece of 52-year-old James Dortch Jr.
The unidentified woman, age 31, said that Dortch had assaulted her, the Houston Chronicle reported.
She additionally noted that he had taken “synthetic cocaine.”
Responding authorities found the living room destroyed and broken glass scattered about, which Dortch’s niece had said was his doing.
Police reportedly attempted to detain the man, but he refused. He was subsequently subdued with pepper spray before being successfully handcuffed.
As they led him away to wait for medical aid, Dortch allegedly began to have trouble breathing.
Police then tried to perform CPR on Dortch, before paramedics ushered him to the hospital. He then passed away.
Police are now awaiting results from an impending autopsy to determine the cause of death.
