GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — A father has drowned rescuing his three children in a Texas lake.

Grand Prairie Police say 32-year-old Jesus Castaneda was sitting on the beach at Joe Pool Lake about 20 miles southwest of Dallas Sunday afternoon when he saw the floatation device carrying his three children flip over in about 10 feet of water.

Castaneda, the children’s mother and a bystander jumped into the water. In a statement, police said all made it safely back to shore except Castaneda. He had slipped beneath the the water and did not resurface. No one was wearing life jackets.

Fire department divers pulled Castaneda from the lake’s bottom about 35 minutes after receiving the call. Immediate life support was given and he was taken to the hospital, but did not regain consciousness.
