CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Three men have been sentenced to prison in an immigrant-smuggling attempt that ended when the smugglers’ sport utility vehicle plowed through a South Texas home, killing the 70-year-old woman inside.
The SUV’s driver has eluded capture, but Senior U.S. District Judge John Rainey in Corpus Christi has sentenced Romeo Cantu, Marcos Adrian and Everardo Hernandez-Salazar Tuesday to prison time ranging from 4 to 8 years for their roles in the run.
Early Aug. 6, a police officer stopped a Chevrolet Suburban in Falfurrias, but as the officer approached it sped off. A short distance away, the SUV crashed into the house, killing Berta Gonzalez.
Adrian was arrested after a short foot pursuit; the other two later admitted involvement.
