The Houston Parks Department operates this facility in the city’s best-known park, which offers anyone easy accessibility to the game of tennis. There are no membership fees or monthly dues, but reservations for one of the 18 lighted courts are required and, depending on the time of day, may need to be made up to a week in advance. Showers, lockers and towels are also available to rent at nominal fees. The fees are modest and the center’s pro shop offers merchandise and services that many club shops in the city offer. The center also sponsors league play and lessons as well.

Westside Tennis & Fitness Club

As the former home of the Houston Rockets’ practice facility and past host to the U.S. Clay Court Championships, Westside is one of Houston’s better-known tennis clubs. But many may not be aware that it offers affordable memberships with many world-class amenities. This is truly a club that offers fitness and athletic activities in all sports for the entire family, but tennis is the heartbeat here. Along with the 27 outdoor courts and ball-machine lanes that are available on a complimentary basis to members, there are four indoor courts that can be reserved for a fee as well. And the resort-style pool offers a great way to unwind following a workout on the court.

Currently, initiation fees are donated directly to local charities and are tax-deductible. However, there is much more to attract prospective members than just that. Nine indoor courts mean the weather won’t interfere with any reservation. The club’s staff also works with members to help them continuously improve their games and find fellow players at their level to partner with. A junior tennis program, European-style sauna and fitness classes, along with the full-service pro shop and restaurant are just some of the additional benefits the club offers.

This facility, which is a part of the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, is a well-kept secret on the southwest side of the city. But it is home, along with its sister outdoor tennis complex, to a great tennis facility that is state-of-the-art for avid players or for those who just want to watch a match. Membership is open to the public and new members are given a free 30-minute lesson and evaluation.
