HORIZON CITY, Texas (CBS Houston) –- A teenager who said she had cancer was arrested after Horizon City police say she lied in order to scam people out of $17,000.
Angie Gomez, 19, was charged with theft of property on April 19.
According to the El Paso Times, Gomez started claiming she had cancer as early as January 2011. She told the El Paso Times that she suffered from leukemia as a child in Kansas City and that it had returned.
“The doctors are telling me to prepare myself and to start planning for what’s about to come,” Gomes told the El Paso Times in March 2011.
Gomez even started her own foundation called “Achieve the Dream.” Reports showed that she sold t-shirts and magnets through a website to help raise money.
Gomez claimed that it was her illness that caused her to miss her senior prom. Da Vinci High School had another prom in her honor as a fundraiser.
The Times reports that police began to investigate Gomez in June 2011 after receiving a complaint that she did not look sick.
Gomez was held in jail on $50,000 bond.
