NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A DNA test has found that Conan, a chimpanzee who had undergone two vasectomies, is the father of a baby born in February.
And the veterinarian at a northwest Louisiana chimpanzee sanctuary is tying the tubes of every male at Chimp Haven. Raven Jackson says that’s because other males in Conan’s group also had regrown at least one of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles.
She says she’s operated on about a dozen more, and about 80 percent have regrown those tubes.
She’s using a new procedure designed for more final closure.
In the meantime, females are on birth control.
All male chimps get vasectomies before coming to the sanctuary in Keithville. Conan had a second vasectomy after he was found to have fathered a baby in 2007.
