The University of Houston Cougar softball program will team up with the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure to host the sixth annual Striking Out Breast Cancer Softball Game Wednesday, March 28. The Cougars will square off against the Texas Longhorns at 6 p.m.

The contest between the two games is but a small part of the action that will take place at Cougar Softball Stadium that evening. In what has become the team’s biggest home event of the season, the Striking Out Breast Cancer Game gives the UH team and supporters a chance to help the fight against breast cancer.

Last season, Houston Softball drew a record-breaking crowd of 1,672 to Cougar Softball Stadium and raised nearly $11,000 that was donated to the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.

“This is something we started when we were recruiting a former player who’s mother had the disease,” said head coach Kyla Holas. “We wanted to do something to honor her. Now it’s grown and grown into the big event it is today. It’s a way to recognize the important women and survivors in our lives, and to show our girls that softball is about more than wins and losses.”

The stadium will be decked out in pink as the home Cougars will don their pink apparel alongwith the umpires, grounds crew and athletics staff to show their support in the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support aswell, and the first 1,500 fans who attend the game will receive a free pinkt-shirt courtesy of Texas Emergency Care and pink beads courtesy of HoustonAthletics. To add to the festivities of the evening, the field will be chalked with pink chalk and a ribbon will be mowed into the outfield.

Starting at 4 p.m., a silent auction will begin with all the proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen. Pink game-worn jerseys and helmets will be on the bidding block as well as assorted items donated to the Houston softball team . Items include an authentic autographed pink softball and USA jersey from Jenny Finch, free massages, Astros suite tickets and much more. An active link of auction items will be available beginning on Monday, March 26 at www.UHCougars.com

Following the game, an autograph session will take place on the field allowing youths theopportunity to meet the Houston softball team.
