In light of the big-money ‘BountyGate’ scandal within the New Orleans Saints organization, the NFL has suspended head coach Sean Payton for one year and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely, the NFL announced on Wednesday.

Williams, who is the current defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, orchestrated the bounty program in New Orleans. He reportedly ran a pay-for-performance program with his defensive players. Players contributed money into a pool, and were paid based upon reaching certain goals, which included successfully knocking out opponents from games.

Although it seems unlikely there would have been a bounty program installed during training camp and preseason games, one can’t help but consider all the animosity that existed between the Saints and Texans as they’ve practiced against each other during the last few preseasons. Perhaps the bounty mentality had already been in place.
